Growing Windmill Palms in Lakewood Ranch
Lakewood Ranch is USDA Zone 9b, and its position several miles inland from the Gulf means winter nights run cooler than Sarasota or Bradenton proper. Frost on open lawns and lakefront lots is a real possibility a few times each winter, so we favor Queen, Sylvester, Mule and Pindo palms and hardy hedges like Podocarpus and Viburnum. Salt is not a factor here, which opens up Magnolia, Crape Myrtle and other flowering trees.
