Clearwater is USDA Zone 10a along the beach and the Intracoastal, with the Gulf holding winter lows a few degrees above inland Pinellas and Pasco. Frost is uncommon near the water, but neighborhoods east toward Countryside, Safety Harbor and the interior of Palm Harbor can see a cold night or two, so we place tender tropicals with care. Beach and bayfront lots need salt-tolerant, wind-tolerant plants, which is where Sabal Palms, Clusia and Bougainvillea shine.
